We need £385,000 for

         Breakthrough Burns Research and Care

advancing the complex treatment of burns

We wish to invest £385,000 over the next three years to establish a centre of excellence for Burns
Research at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The Burns Service at Chelsea and Westminster
Hospital provides specialist care for 3,000 patients from across London and the South East.

Burns patients are unique in their need for multidisciplinary care and their injuries can cause
the  most excruciating pain. Despite significant progress, the international burns research
community is clear that there is insufficient evidence to guide clinical practice in the care of burns
patients. This is a view shared by the Medical Research Council.

Our centre will advance research into the treatment of inflammation, pain, immune response
and lung injury, preventing significant organ damage. We want burns patients to be offered care to
the same standards of evidence-based practice common in other areas of medicine.

This research matters to 8,000 new burns patients treated every year in the UK. It matters to society
because over £100 million is spent caring for these patients. It matters to Professor Masao Takata
and Dr Jonathon Handy who wish to undertake this research.
